Apparently Irish car dealers are superstitious and didn't like the idea of selling cars with the unlucky 13 XX 1234 registrations. In any case car sales fell off a cliff following the Anglo Phone Calls and all that ensued. The other peculiar thing was that most cars were bought/sold in January/February in order to have the prestige - up yours I am better than you cos I can afford to buy a car with the current year's registration (since 1987 that is) on its number plates.
Car sales boomed every January since the new numbering system.
But oh no car dealers not happy in July when they still have another 6 months to endure before things pickup.
So bright ? idea - in the year of our lord 2013 we don't have 13 MO 1234 reg plates in January - no no - we have 131 MO 1234 reg plates in January and then - real brainwave we have 132 reg plates from 1 July unlucky 13 - of course beginning in the year of our lord 2013.!
Now is that clear as mud?
