Connaught wasn't even free Prince. The Franco-Irish held the small garrison town of Castlebar for less than a week...hardly independence. Any book on this topic explains that the French worked by setting up directorates as units of republics. They did so in Italy at the same time. The 'Connaught Republic' was actually a French directorate. France's plan for the Irish Republic was to have it under their control (as the Italian states were) so regardless the Connaught or Irish Republics would still have been under foreign control.
Humbert himself spoke of the 'the Government of the Province of Connacht' not Ireland and the British saw John Moore only as ‘the Rebel President of the Connaught Directory'.
