With less than 40% turnout and a margin of about 1.5% between yea and nay, I highly doubt the vote to abolish the Seanad (and it was a clumsy, lazy effort in my opinion and rightly defeated) will prove to be a watershed of any sort.
Tackling the mortgage arrears next year is much more likely to be a low point. If the government sorts that out properly, it won't be a votewinner- but they will have negotiated an incredibly tough programme for government and leave us in good shape relative to how they found us,
Will they get any thanks from the average Irish voter? Fat chance. Five years or so of tough medicine is about all we can usually take before we run whinging for the FF apron strings again, and so it continues......
