I not sure how much water I use - don't have a power shower and only take a bath about once a year, whether I need it or not. Average enough I'd say but I will be using less in the future once the meter starts spinning and you actually get some feedback.
I heard young Boyd Barrett mouthing off about water charges the other day - saying that if they fixed the leaky mains pipes all would be well and we wouldn't need to save water.
Unfortunately a lot of the leaks are on the consumer's side of the gate. Plumbers are going to be run off their feet fixing leaks once the charging starts.
In Castlebar it was like the cold war there for while - you had the two pipe surveying companies: USA and USSR, shoving their respective cameras up the pipe system looking for leaks. The mains leakage rate here will have reduced significantly compared with before.
But I bet every household has some leak that needs fixing, be it large or small. The meters and even more the fact that we will be paying for this chemically treated water will mean big business for the plumbers - so it's helping to increase employment too.
