The assumption is that more people paying tax automatically covers not just the increased service demand, but also every other new service provided in the last few decades, every upgrade of existing service, every change in the cost of providing a service, etc.
I don't believe this holds up. We've more of everything nowadays than we had over 20 years ago. More roads, more public buildings, a better range of services (albeit with cuts of late), more employees, higher salary costs, etc. The post I was responding too assumes this is all covered by existing tax and I'm just highlighting I don't think its necessarily is.
Thats not to say there aren't improvements in how we use our taxes, but thats a different discussion.
