This is a discussion board - a Sinn Fein rep was trying to take the high moral ground on the day they finally dug that poor SF victim out of the bog. Of course people are going to point that kind of irony out!
But Big Phil did answer the question about him putting in cvs to Irish water. He clearly answered saying that none of them got jobs. What else should he have said in answer? Should he have denied it altogether?
And as for pointing out the discrepancy between the bould Matt and his party seniors up in Belfast I think that's perfectly legit - merely pointing out to the others in the committee who would shortly have to vote on his suitability that Matt didn't even seem to be in line with his own party ministers who obviously saw great benefit in having an Irish agricultural commissioner in Europe even going to the trouble to put it in writing.
He also answered the question about housing issue by saying that he was defending himself against a libel or slander - suggesting that he had a right to defend his good name. Obviously he denied that allegation very vigorously.
He had no problem discussing the jobs allegation though - obviously that one was true.
As for being in charge when setting up a water utility as required by the EU and IMF I suggest that in the long run people in Roscommon will be glad of the investment the water charges will bring so that they can finally drink unpolluted water. It is a chicken and egg - no investment -= poor quality infrastructure. The money has to be put into it to bring us out of the kind of third world situation some parts of the country still find themselves in. And at least the people of Roscommon won't have to pay for water incoming until the boil notices are finally stopped with the new treatment plants in place.
