Well certain councillors felt that all roundabouts are created equal no matter which direction the traffic comes from over the course of the day. They repainted the lanes in honour of some 'standard' concept of a roundabout which doesn't exist. The rules of the road clearly state that you have to follow the markings on the lanes as you approach a roundabout. Anyone who has driven in towns around the country will have seen a wide range of different markings - designed to deal with the layout of individual towns, very few of which are the same - no laid out grids here.
The result of the 'standardisation' is of course much worse jams and slower throughput compared with the markings designed to give the optimum throughput over the day as people go to and from work, shops, schools.
It's perfectly legal to loop the roundabout though. Perhaps more people should do it?
