Thanks madman. Not sure that alum is all that controversial outside of the loony tunes fringe. Ferric chloride is an alternative. For years they didn't use alum at Lough Mask because of Baxter/Travenol. But we had very high levels of trihalomethanes as a result. Not only are they smelly but they include a number of well-established carcinogens. So we have to be careful of what we wish for.
