Lets get a bit real here .. Knock Airport is a fine 'Infrastructural Asset' to have located here in Mayo .. but .. it doesn't make money in its current form.
From my understanding .. the recent increases in usage/traffic .. has not increased profitability .. but instead its losses have increased.
This is down to a number of factors - reduced charges to the carriers to make sure they use the Airport .. while a need for increased staff to deal with the increased demand... so Joe Public has being asked (?) to cover these losses and 'buy into' the facility via the County Councils investment.
This does not bode well for the future .. as although increased traffic growth may be a 'great achievement' .. what will its price be .. and will Joe Public have to constantly cover these losses ?
Making the area around the Airport a 'Tax Free Zone' is No longer possible under EU Regulations .. Shannon lost its 'Tax Free Status' in 2003 .. so lets try and come up will more novel ideas of making the Airport work better for less cost !
