A sad demise to a political career that has dominated the Mayo landscape for all of my life.
Early days in the count I know, and no actual results in yet but have to say the projections don't bode at all good for Enda
The unfortunate thing is that he actually had a remarkable 5 years and surpassed most people's expectations of him but I think the inevitable adage that all political careers end in failure yet again holds through.
Another unfortunate is that, as a person, Enda is an incredibly likeable and sociable person with considerable integrity but that rarely if ever came through in his premiership and not at all in this campaign where he was Godawful wooden. Of course on hindsight he should've cut loose from his handlers and been his own man. But in an age of focus groups and advisors established parties are petrified of such risk.
Anyway, that's the end of any prospect now for any benefits for Castlebar or Mayo as any new Govt or leaders will have a Cork or East coast bias (some might say a TD that spent 40+ years in Dáil Éireann never could've had much of a Mayo focus anyway)
So long Enda. Thanks for the ups. Sorry for the downs.
