Am I the only person out there angry that the tourist office in Castlebar is not manned by a paid person? I understand the benefits of volunteering both for an organisation and for the volunteers themselves in terms of skills gained and utilised and personal satisfaction. However, surely this is a cop out on behalf of the Chamber of Commerce and Mayo County Council and Bord Failte or whoever is in charge of tourism in this country.
Somebody out there is worthy of a paid position in the tourist office and not only that, who exactly has deemed that tourists ONLY visit Castlebar during a specified 6 month period in the year?
When I first returned to Ireland and came to Castlebar I was shocked that the Tourist Office was closed 'out of season'. I still find it self-defeating for a town to not have this facility available all year round. A working tourist office may not necessarily attract visitors in the first instance but it may sway some visitors to return or spread word of mouth about the town in a complimentary fashion once they return home.
