Basically, each new click is a 'hit' - e.g. each time someone loads a message from the bulletin board that event is recorded as a separate request for an item or a 'hit'. Some web counters count separate visitors to the site. Here we have been using the basic 'hit' counter since the beginning so we are comparing like with like - since May 1997 - in order to track our growth rate. In the early days we were delighted to have 3000 or 4000 'hits' in a month. We even did a big yahoo! about March 99 when we reached a cumulative 50,000 hits over the period May 97 to March 99! The system we use is called pwebstat so you can check out the nitty gritty details if you are interested.
