Ring Forts

In the Breaffy area of Castlebar there are a number of ring forts (fairy forts).

I have no idea who constructed these.

Some of them seem to be more elaborate than others .

There always seems to be a cluster of these where ever you find them,

in another area with which I am familiar in Co. Kerry, as you approach Dingle,

there are quite a number of them with a village being named after each one

of them, Lispole , Lisdargan etc.

They say that when you stand on one you can see seven forts . I believe that they

are much older than the Ceide fields and some of them may contain underground

passages. People are very reluctant to tamper with them, much like the Pyramids,

and as a result they are completely overgrown. I tried to take a photo of a few of

them but with little success as you can see from the one I produce here . I am

hoping that PJ might be able to throw some light on these as he lived close to

them and his teacher had a great interest in such thing.
