Interesting that Alderman Kieran Gavin aka Blackie (the lord mayor of Castlebar - well Chairman of the Urban District Council) did not do very well here on the web site poll before the election for the local authority but he walked away with the poll in real life. He's that rare thing a decent skin - a hard working politician and community man. While you may not agree with his views on every detail of life in Castlebar, his heart is in the right place and a hell of a lot of Castlebar people like him a lot as is shown in his huge popularity at the polls. He also did Castlebar proud at all public occasions, e.g. the famous night when Castlebar came runner up in the Information Age Competition.
