Partially agree.
The skills you pick up at school, like how to get on with people who annoy you, feigned deference to authority and general work skills do stay with you. Indeed, I can find Dublin and Paris on a map, and know a few words of French.
The exam in my day ( a few howlin' moons ago ) was an endurance test, with swots locking themselves away for over a year to get the best grades. They missed out on the best stuff, like as Kharn pointed out, learning to play the guitar.
Me, I made lots of friends up the lake and did stupid stuff. Though I am not perfect myself (okay, maybe in brief moments of delusion after 5 pints of Carlsberg I am perfect), I didn't end up school damaged.
