Come to think of it the thread below on male/female roles in society illustrates the point re lack of censorship in the Internet Naughties. Could/would such a thread be published as a correspondence in the CT or any of the conventional newspapers? Unlikely. To complain because one can't publish a (very hurtful if untrue) rumour about a named individual is churlish in view of the incredible freedom of speech we do enjoy vis a vis 10,20,30,40 years ago. Remember the bishop and the nightie controversy?
The other difference is that the tribunals and courts have caught up with the wrongdoers. Nevermore can politicians, business people, or their relations be surprised when they don't get away with breaking the law, taking bribes, not paying their taxes, etc., just because they are rich and/or powerful. They may not always get caught but they sure shouldn't be surprised any more when they do get caught!
