Today FM IS transmitted fromn Croaghmoyle (Castlebar) on 101.6 MHz (Although Century never were)
This is because when Today FM signed their transmission contract with RTE they had the foresight to insist on performance clauses being included in the Contract which basically stated that unless Today FM's signal and coverage was as good as RTE's then RTE didnt get paid for transmitting Today FM's signal.
Whether the failure to transmit TV3 from Croaghmoyle is down to penny pinching on the part of TV3 or RTE im not too sure.
While TV signals are on much higher frequencies (174-230 and -usually 470-854 Mhz) and therfore tend not to travel as well as FM radio it must be remembered that TV still has the advantage that most people install a big high-gain directional aerial on their rooftops for their TV they tend to make do with a short telescopic metal rod sticking out of cheaply designed sets for their radio listening
