Bikes are great transportation. Even though we have very rainy autumns and winters in Oregon, we have a very high percentage of year round bike riders (young and old). We have a state law which makes one percent of all road tax revenues available for developing bike paths and bike lanes. So almost anywhere you go you can ride in a dedicated bike lane, seperated from auto traffic.
I find that I can run errands quicker on the bike than in my car, because I can go the wrong way on one way streets (legally), drive through heavy traffic and have no problem finding a parking space. Most businesses provide bike racks. Even our transit buses are equipped with bike carriers, so you can take your bike on the bus and then finish your journey on the bike. I live in a very bicycle friendly city.
