I should add to this that the founding fathers felt that the voters were too unsophisticated to vote properly. So, they came up with the idea of representative voting, ie, the Electoral College. The US was never intended to be a true democracy, but instead a republic, where the people are only given the opportunity to elect representatives that would vote on their behalf.
With this method, the power remains with the few, not the many.
