Dare I suggest and IRC applet?
That way ppl wouldn't just have to go to a chat room do talk here, they could talk to other people in other IRC channels!
And, you could do it from a regular irc client like mIRC or Pirch.
The con's are:
* Loads of places block IRC in and out of firewalls
* If someone's using an IRC client, it's not generating hits for the site
