Mike the 5K you see on the download is measured in KILOBYTES per second. The Modem speed is measured in KILOBITS per second. You should multiply the 5 by 8 bits (8bits in a byte) to get your download speed in Kilobits, in this case 40 Kilobits/Sec which is about as fast as it gets.
