The Breaffy G.A.A Millennium Symposium
began last night with the renowned commentator Michael O Muircheartaigh taking to the
podium. For nearly 3 hours, he spoke on topics concerning the development of Gaelic Games
in Ireland. He reminisced on great events in Irish history which propelled the interest in
the sport. Stories from matchs, and interviews with players conducted over the years were
told with great humour.
The crowd in attendance were treated to an evening filled with humour
and story telling, as the greatest of Irish commentators recounted his memories of some of
the great events in G.A.A history.
At the end of the night the crowd were offered the chance to but
questions to the speaker. Some of the questions concerned the growing lack of interest in
some built-up urban areas in Gaelic Games. The effects of soccer on the sport and the
level of youth involvement was another question but to the speaker. He placed concern on
the topic of players becoming professionals. He recounted the effects on small clubs after
professional rugby was introduced. He spoke at length of the effects that 'major
sponorship' within the G.A.A might bring to all levels of the organisations.
His concerns were also reflected by the 'Cathoirleach' for the night Martin Carney. |
