Castlebar Senior Chess Championships
Castlebar's Senior Chess Championships (closed) concluded last month with a win for veteran Tom McNally. The competition was played off over the past several weeks in Flannelly's of Ellison St. The full results read:

Castlebar Under-16 Chess Competitions
Junior Team League:
Castlebar Junior Chess Team League concluded during the Summer, in the College of Further Education, Newtown, Castlebar. A total of six teams participated. The winning team was captained by Fergal Joyce, The Orchard, Castlebar.

Senior Team League:
The senior section also had six team entries. Bryan Duffy's team, who had led throughout most of the competition, were defeated in the final by Sean McHugh's squad.

Individual Chess Titles:
Robert Frost (Pontoon Dr.), with a brilliant late run captured the Junior Title.
Jarlath Sweeney (Milebush), Gerard Mc Donagh (Greenfields), and Patrick Leonard (Maryland) took second, third, and fourth places respectively.
In the Senior Boys section William O'Keeffe (Newtown) defeated Bryan Duffy (Rowan Dr.) in a marvellous final. They finished all square with William taking the title in a sudden death play-off.
Keith Brennan (The Oaks) took the bronze position and Fintan Murphy (Westport Rd.) had to settle for fourth.
Community Games Finals
At Mosney in the Community Games under 16 chess, the Castlebar team finished in third place, winning the Bronze medals. More details to follow.
