Atlantic Coast Tour

This tour heads west from Castlebar to Newport, which is on the north east corner of Clew Bay. It then heads along the northern coast of the bay to Mullraney making its way to Achill Sound which is the point which connects Irelands largest offshore island to the mainland. Once on the island the tour takes in the Blue Flag beach at Doogort, passing close to the Deserted Village and then onto the the Blue Flag beach at Keel with spectacular views of Minaun Cliffs. The tour then climbs to the back of the cliffs and into the village of Dooega and then onto the Atlantic Coast drive following around Ashleam Bay back to Achill Sound and then south again on the Corraun Peninsula all along the Atlantic coast and back to Mullraney. From there it is back to Newport and then North East passing Beltra Lough with great views of the Nephin Beg mountain range on the left. A sharp right turn brings you south again towards Castlebar with the climb of the Windy Gap at 700 feet being one of the high points of the whole tour. Once over the top of the climb it is downhill on a narrow twisting road all the way into Castlebar.
