Introduction
The General Nursing and Psychiatric Nursing Registration/Diploma Programmes
provide education and training leading to registration as a general or psychiatric nurse
with An Bord Altranais and the award of a Diploma in Nursing from a third
level institution.
Following registration with An Bord Altranais, applicants will be eligible
for employment as either general or psychiatric nurses.
Educational Requirements
Applicants for admission to the General and Psychiatric Registration/Diploma
Programmes must:
1. Have obtained in the Leaving Certificate examination a minimum grade of
C3 in two higher level papers and a minimum grade of D3 in four ordinary
or higher level papers in the following subjects:

English or Irish (not Foundation level Irish)

Mathematics (not Foundation level)
-
A Laboratory Science subject (Biology, Physics, Chemistry, Physics &
Chemistry [joint] or Agricultural Science)

Three other subjects (which may include English or Irish and a Laboratory
Science subject not already included)
-
or have equivalent educational qualifications to the above
and
2. meet the minimum educational requirements specified by the third level
institution concerned for entry to the Programmes.
The minimum educational requirements may be accumulated over not more than
two sittings of the Leaving Certificate examination or an equivalent examination.
Equivalent Second Level Qualifications
Applicants claiming equivalent results, accumulated over not more than
two sittings of the examination concerned, will need to submit documentary
proof of these results to the Nursing Careers Centre for verification by
An Bord Altranais, when
requested to do so.
