Employment Legislation
The legislation covering Health & Safety is
  • Safety in Industry Acts 1995 - 1980
  • General Application Regulations 1993
  • Safety, Health & Welfare at Work Act 1989
  1. All employers are responsible for the safety, health & welfare of all its employees at work.
  2. The legislation states that the employer and the employee have fundamental responsibilities, which they must adhere to, within the workplace.
For the employer these are:
  • A safe place of work
  • A safe system of work
  • Safe access to the work
  • Protective clothing (where applicable)
  • Safe machinery
  • All necessary training and supervision as required
For the employee, they are:
  • To take reasonable care of his/her own health/safety and also of others to comply with all safety requirements
  • To use protective clothing and equipment
  • To report all defects in the workplace which may be dangerous
All employers must have a Health & Safety statement which all employees must be aware of abide by.
