Tips for college
If you can't be good...be careful!!
Apart from Rock n' Roll, there are two other clich6s which can be a
threat to health in the student life, sex and drugs. If you are going
to try either of them, the best thing to be is to be informed, and to act
on your information. Nobody wants to catch AIDS, and this is just
the best known danger that both carry.
Sex is something that the student has a reputation for indulging in.
Avoiding the arguments for and against it, what needs to be tackled are
the dangers involved. Formerly, the fear that most heterosexuals
worried about was the danger of pregnancy, and some today, still see no
other. This is rather naive in our society, when sexually transmitted
infections (STIs) are still very common, aside entirely from the threat
of AIDS. STIs can be caught by anyone homo- or hetero-, and are no
joke. Syphilis still kills. Not all contraceptives provide
this kind of protection, so it is a good idea to check out what is available.
STIs don't just go away, you know.
Almost all students try drugs in college at some stage. Caffeine
and Alcohol are the most popular, followed closely by nicotine, and the
drugs which are deemed illegal. Whether a drug is legal or not, people
are going to try it, so the best measure is to make an informed decision
based on the facts. Ultimately, the safest advice is not to try anything
without knowing what you are doing.
In the end, college is a time to try things, whether it is sexually,
or otherwise. But you have to remember that trying things does not
mean you have a license to be stupid about it.
