Foroíge - National Youth Development Organisation
Foroíges Purpose:
The purpose of Foroíge is to enable young people to involve
themselves consciously and actively in their own development and in the
development of society.
This purpose challenges and supports young people to involves themselves
in:

Developing their character and talents
-
Thinking for themselves, reflecting on their actions and tking
responsibilty
-
Having fun and making friends
-
Building positive relationships
-
Aquiring knowledge and skills for life
-
Improving the community
Foroíge's Work:
Foroíge provides a comprehensive range of youth work services
through the operation of Foroíge Clubs, Local Youth Services, Local
Youth Development Projects and Youth Information Centres. This multi-pronged
approach enables the organisation to:
meet the developmental needs of young people in general, and;
in particular circumstances, to focus on vunerable young people
in relation to issues arising from poverty, marginalisation and social
exclusion, under-achievement at school, early school leaving, youth
crime, substance abuse and family difficulties.
Foroíge's Age Range:
The work of Foroíge is directed primarily at young people in
their adolescent years - the years between childhood and adulthood.

Foroíge club membership is confined to boys and girls in the 12-18
age group.

Foroíge operated Local Youth Services and Local Youth
Development Projects normally involve young people in the 10-20 age group.

The Foroíge organisation promotes and practices youth work which:

involves young people in real life learning experiences using a "learning
by doing" educational approach

helps young people to negotiate their way successfully through adolescence

promotes a setting where young people can socialise in a safe and
caring environment

makes it easy for young people, through suitable group structures, to express
their opinions and exercise influence and leadership

fosters participation, collective action and voluntary activity by
youth and adults

gives practical expression to the ideas of the dignity, uniqueness, creativity
and value of each individual person.
Regional Youth Officers:
Regional Youth Officers assist clubs, through advice and training,
with organisational issues and the development off club programmes.

The Club Meeting:
The Foroige Club usually meet once a week. Each meeting lasts abouttwo
hours and includes:

a formal meeting where members make democratic decisions concerning
the club
-
club activities based on Foroíges education programmes
-
recreational activites such as sports and games
Programmes & Activites:
Foroíge clubs plan and carry out a programme of activites desighned
to meet the interests and needs of members. To assist in this regard, Foroíge
has developed eight education programmes, as follows:

Club Officers:
Club Members elect form among themselves the following officers;

Club PRO (Public Relations Officer)
The Club Leader:
Each Club has adult leaders who are the guides and mentors of the club.
The Leaders take collective responsibility for the club. There must be
at least one adult leader present in order for a club meeting to take place,
and Foroíge stongly advises that more than one leader is present
at all times. The leaders appoint one of their number to be overall Club
Leader. Te person is eligible to stand for election to the National
Council and to vote at such elections.
The Club Committee:
The Club Officers, the Club Leader and not more than two other members
form the club committee. The Club Committee is responsible for planning
club meetings and making sure that the tasks involved in the day-to-day
management ot the club are carried out.
