Aurora and Pink Panther Come Out Tops
Last Thursday evening provided some excellent sailing on Clew Bay. David
Baird/Pat Tully's 'Merlin' took line honours with John & Gair Gordon's
'Aurora' just ten seconds behind. 'Aurora' however won on IRC handicap
beating the Gaughan's 'Privateer' by a mere eleven seconds on corrected
time. Third was 'Rockabill', helmed by Damien Cashin in Robin Smith's
absence. Seamas Moneley's 'Pink Panther was the ECHO winner, with Aurora
in
second place just under a minute behind.
This was the eighth race of ten in the Summer Series. Overall Robin &
Linda
Smith's First 30 'Rockabill' looks unbeatable on IRC, while the Bourke's
'Uforia' seems certain to take the ECHO title.

Midsummer Sailing on Clew Bay
Last Thursday the weather was perfect for midsummer's eve and where better
to spend it than sailing on Clew Bay? Nine boats raced, seven in Cruisers
1 and two in Cruisers 2 - Brian Quinn's "Duscheka" and Maurice
Keogh's "Mary Ann" who was having her first race of the season.
A few boat owners were absent leaving able second-in-commands at the helm
including Tim Corcoran helming Ian Gaughan's "Privateer" and
Francois Voignier helming Jim Finan's "Silver Mite".
Confusion reigned when the boats sailed out towards Mulranny to round
Mutt's Mark only to discover it had broken free from it's mooring during
rough weather. All boats sailed back into the lighthouse at Dornish for
a new start and a new course around more stable marks.
There is no racing this weekend, the fourth race in the summer series
is next Thursday and the NORA Regatta begins on Friday. It is expected
that a lot of visiting boats will compete in Club racing on Thursday.
Northabout
A special presentation of a ships clock and a bottle of whiskey was made
to the crew of Northabout by Commodore Joe McGovern. "Northabout"
is a 60 foot aluminium boat built by club member Jarlath Cunnane. The
eight man crew will sail to Greenland and attempt to navigate the Northwest
Passage through to Vancouver, a voyage of almost 8,000 miles. Jarlath
Cunnane was also part of the South Aris expedition which followed in the
tracks of Sir Earnest Shackleton in the Antarctic, South Georgia and Elephant
Island. Some of the South Aris crew including Jamie Young were also at
the club to wish "Northabout" well.
Another visitor last night was Gerhart Mele a photographer from a major
Austrian sailing magazine, he has spent the last few days visiting the
maritime side of Mayo. Gerhart sailed on "Merlin".

Summer Races
The second race in the summer series was sailed on Thursday 14th June
in blustery conditions. The race got underway in a downpour but it abated
to leave quite a pleasant but still windy evening. Only a few were brave
enough to launch spinnakers and the big sails caused problems for some
boats. David Baird/Pat Tully's Merlin was first over the line but after
adjusting time for handicap, the results were as follows:

Joe McGovern at 098 41109 or Sailing Secretary Blair Stanaway (098 25157).
NORTHABOUT
There will be a special presentation in the club next Thursday night (21
June) for Club Member Jarlath Cunnane. He and his crew are setting off
on Saturday 23 June to try and sail through the legendary Northwest Passage
in Northern Canada. Their boat 'Northabout' is Aluminium hulled and was
built by Jarlath in Knock.
