Castlebar Tennis Club Update: 22 October 2001

EXPERIENCE WINS OUT IN MIXED FINAL

Long experienced Castlebar player Seamus Granahan with his partner Margaret Glancy proved to be too good for up and coming National Junior ranking star Warren Atkins and his partner Anna Cresham in the Club Championships, the finals of which were played on Sunday last. This Mixed Doubles match was to be the highlight of the Final's Day with a display of tennis not regularly seen at the Castlebar Club. After what everyone considered a thrilling match Seamus Granahan and Margaret Glancy beat Warren Atkins and Anna Cresham by 7 - 6, 0 - 6, 6 - 3. It was a marvellous spectacle to see all five courts occupied by the finalists of the day. Play commenced at 3.30 p.m. and continued until 10 p.m. when the final match came off court.

The Club Championship prizes were sponsored by McDermott-Doherty Insurance represented by Pat Doherty and by Castlebar Book and Card Centre represented by Catherine Brennan. Prizes were presented by the Men's Captain Pat Doherty and by Lady's Captain Gina Kelly. Tom Murphy representing Chairperson Michael Murphy Junior thanked everybody for taking part and thanked the sponsors for their very generous sponsorship. Food and refreshments provided by the Committee were available all day.

Fun Mixed Doubles First Friday Competition to take place at the Club on Friday 2nd November. Members and non-members are welcome to play. President's Day will take place on Sunday 11th November. AGM of Castlebar Tennis Club will take place on Tuesday 13th November.

David O'Malley Sponsored Fun Tournament

The David O'Malley sponsored Fun Tournament which took place at the Club on Friday 5th October was a great success. The weather was just glorious for tennis and over 30 people took part. The Committee would like to thank David and Loretto O'Malley for their very generous sponsorship.

The Dr. David O'Kane Memorial Cup
The Dr. David O'Kane Memorial Cup took place at the Club last Sunday. A large number of players participated. Michael Murphy Junior, Chairperson of the Club thanked the O'Kane family for attending and participating in the tournament. He also thanked Peter and Nicola Sheridan for their sponsorship. Ann Garavan, President of the Club reminded people of the wonderful work done by the late Dr. David O'Kane on behalf of the children suffering from cystic fibrosis. All proceeds of this tournament will go towards the Cystic Fibrosis Organisation. The Dr. David O'Kane Perpetual Trophy was presented to the winners by Dr. Irene O'Kane.

The All Ireland Nestle Ladder
Once again Castlebar juniors have excelled at the All Ireland Junior Nestle Ladder competition which took place in Cork two weeks ago. Only one player in each age group from each Provence can play in this competition. Results from the Castlebar Camp:
Winner of U 14 Competition was 12 year year old Laura Cuddy from Knockaphunta, Castlebar. Laura , an outstanding player has won so many major tournaments over the last year. Castlebar Tennis Club is very proud of her. Catriona Ruane from Castlebar won this tournament back in 1979. Daniel Glancy came second in the U 14 Competition and Kevin McNamara came fourth in the U 16 Competition.


Family Confrontation
For the first time in the Club's history a mother and son will play on opposite sides of the net. Margaret Glancy and her son Daniel will battle it out for a place in the Mixed Doubles final of the Castlebar Club Championship Competition. Eamon says that "youth will win out in the end."
