Mayo's Fianna Fail Deputy and Minister for State Dr. Tom Moffatt has assured a delegation to see Min. for Education Mr. Michael Martin that the problems concerning funding and setting a start-up date for Scoil Muire agus Padraic in Swinford will be resolved before the end of the month. The delegation was lead by Fr. Stephen O'Mahony and Martin Kearney, Mr. Duffy and Sr. Kiloran were also present.

Dept. Michael Ring criticised the Government for its failure to make adequate provision for the transport of live cattle for sale abroad. According to Deputy ring if the government does not make this provision, the farmers concerned will loose revenue, market share and confidence.

200,000 people are expected to attend the All Ireland Fleadh in Ballina next summer. A meeting of Coras Ceoltoiri na hEireann in Dublin voted to hold next years Fleadh in Ballina to coincide with the celebrations to commemorate the two hundred year anniversary of the 1798 rebellion.

Speaking in Knock at the week-end, the campaigner for social justice, Sr. Stan, said that the Celtic Tiger image of the Irish Economy was an insult to the many poor people in the society. The image of Ireland as a young and wealthy society was inaccurate and insulting to the poor on whose backs this image was being built.

Ballina UDC Chairman Terry McCole paid tribute to President Mary Robinson on the last day of her Presidency. Mr. McCole recalled how President Robinson (who is of course from Ballina) launched her presidential campaign in Ballina seven years ago to prove `there is an Ireland outside Dublin'

There have been two traffic accidents in Castlebar area. Three people were taken to hospital following a road traffic accident between two cars on the Breaffy Rd. last night. A lorry and a car collided on the Claremorris / Ballyhaunis Rd. early this morning one of those involved was later taken to hospital in Castlebar General Hospital.

The `Lonesome Boatman' by Navigator, recorded in Castlebar has gone to number 30 in the Irish Charts. It is the first time that a dance single from the West has reached the charts.

The number of unemployed people on the 'Live Register' in the West has dropped by 2,500 according to figures released at the end of August.

Mr. Joe Johnson, Senior General Surgeon at Mayo General Hospital has been appointed Chairman of the Mayo / Roscommon Hospice Fund.

Kevin Bourke, Mayoman of the Year has proposed that a Memorial Garden be erected in Mayo to commemorate mother Theresa and Princess Diana.

Westport Gardai are investigating an unprovoked attack on Councillor John Joe O'Malley in Westport.

Chairman of Mayo Co. Council, Pat Kilbane will lead a delegation from Mayo to commemorate the death of 11 Achill people in a fire in Kirkantillock, East Dunbarton, Glasgow in Scotland 60 years ago. They were killed when fire swept through a 'bothy' where they were sleeping. Mr. Kilbane, is by coincidence, a nephew of one of the men that was killed.

Westport UDC have expressed their extreme disappointment with the refusal of An Taisce to withdraw its objection to the building of a Leisure Centre in Westport. The UDC fear that the three million pounds in EU funding will be lost by the Project.

Over one million pounds in donations for Knock Airport has been received by Mon. Dom. Grealy . The Airport made £360,000 profit last year. It employs 40 people and 40 more in the concessions.

The German couple reported missing in Lough Mask last night have been found safe and well. The alarm was raised when they did not return with the boat they had rented before nightfall. The couple were located in Clonbur, they had lost their way when heavy fog descended on the lake.

Castlebar UDC is to rule on the applications to build a Multiplex Cinema in Castlebar. One application by Barcastle Properties is for a Cinema Complex in the Industrial Estate. The other by Cavendish Lane Properties had an application to build a six screen cinema near Dunnes Stores turned down by An Bord Planala. Tony McHugh, the owner of Cavendish Lane Properties will submit a revised application to Castlebar U.D.C.

Mayo County Choir will resume rehearsals in the Traveller's Friend to-morrow night. The choir is under the direction of Niamh O'Kelly and newcomers are welcome.

The Garda investigation into the theft of £10,000 from the safe in the Duty Free area of Knock Airport on August 28th last.

Claremorris teacher Denis O'Boyle has been appointed Director of the Education Centre in Castlebar. This Centre is one of 12 which have been established nationally.

The founder of the Knock Shrine Society, Mrs. Judy Coyne of Belcarra, has been honoured by the Pope. Mrs. Coyne was made a member of the Order of St. Sylvester. The society was founded by Mr. Coyne and her husband over 70 years ago in 1929.

A bulk Cement Carrier has been involved in an accident near Beltra Lake. Motorists are advised to take care.

Mayo County Council at a meeting last night decided to defer a policy decision on Group Water Schemes until such time as it holds a meeting with members of the National Group Water Federation in two weeks time.

Operating profits at Knock International Airport this year are expected to be in the region of £360,000. Passenger numbers are up on last years figures by 17% to 190,000.

Commissioner Padraic Flynn will launch the Castlebar Neighbourhood Youth Project in the Boxing Club. The Project is sponsored by Foroige, South West Mayo Leader Co., Meitheral Mhaigheo and the Western Health Board. The Project will provide sports services for young people in a family atmosphere.

Mr. John Maughan the manager of the Mayo County football team will be guest of honour at a Lions Club `Fish Night' on Friday Sept. 12th in aid of the Mayo branch of Cerebral Palsy Ireland CPI. Tickets will be for sale at £17.50 each, it is expected that £3,000 will be raised.

The monthly mini-vigil at Ballintubber Abbey on Friday 12th will be held for Peace and Reconciliation in Northern Ireland. Rev. Garry Hastings, Rector of Holy Trinity Church Westport will lead the reflection from 10.00pm to 11.00pm.

Castlebar was awarded 5 points more than last year in the National Tidy Towns Competition. The results were announced in Dublin last night. Westport was judged to be the tidiest town in the county.

A meeting of Mayo County council will take place this evening at 5pm in Aras an Chondae. Among the items for discussion are :

* Group Water Schemes

* Blue Flag Awards for Mayo's beaches

* Grants for improvements on non-national roads provided by the Dept. of the Environment.

The visit of the judges to Castlebar for the Telecom Information Age Town Competition will be the subject of a video which will be broadcast on the local Community Channel T.V. at 9.30 pm this evening.

`AWARE' will host a public lecture on the subject of Depression this evening in the Failte Suite of the Welcome Inn Hotel at 8.30 pm. The lecturer will be Dr. Una Bradley, Consultant Child Psychiatrist

Access to the Book of Condolences for Princess Diana has been made by Castlebar Chamber of Commerce at the Information Age Office in Ellison St. Castlebar. Members of the public who wish to sign this book are invited to do so at the office where it is possible to write messages in this book via the INTERNET.

A Gala Celebration Night for Cerebral Palsy will take place in the Welcome Inn Hotel on Friday night next. The event is organised by the Castlebar Lions Club.

Mayo Vocational Education Committee (VEC) has been allocated a slight increase in the number of teachers it employs due to in increase in the number of pupils attending the eight schools it manages. 18 new or replacement teachers have been appointed and the VEC is seeking additional appointments from the Dept. of Education.

John Hume MEP, MP, will open the Peace Gardens at Banada in Sligo on Sunday next at 3pm.

The Farewell Event organised for President Robinson which was to have taken place on Saturday next has been cancelled, refunds for bus tickets from Moygownah purchased by people hoping to attend the event may be optioned.

A black and white sheep dog has strayed into the land of Dennis Gibbons of Errew, Ballyheane. Please claim him. !

A stray Charolais bullock has been found in the land of Walter Phelan of Carrowholly, Westport. Will the owner please collect him ?

A purse with some money inside was found in the Dunnes Stores carpark. Owner please collect it from the Garda Station.

Highlights ;

Motorists are reminded that children are back to school to-day, so they should take special care and watch out while driving.

Castlebar library has been chosen for a special computer education / information project. Ten computers will be installed, Microsoft CD ROMs will be available, as will teaching for the public in computer use. The Internet and how to use it will be demonstrated and access will be available to the general public.

A bus and car collided outside Ballyhaunis on the Claremorris Rd. last night, at approx. 1.00am. Three ambulances were called to the scene and three people were admitted to Castlebar General Hospital.

'The London Boatman' CD by the Navigator will be launched in Daly's Hotel (The Mall ) to-night. Recorded by Castlebar artists, it features five dance mixes and is produced and distributed by Grapevine Solid Record label.
