Helicopters

Home

We had great fun on our helicopter project!

We talked about which helicopter would be best - a slow landing one or a faster landing one. We decided a slow landing was safer

We cut out paper helicopters using a template.
When Cathal dropped it, it spun in a clockwise direction.

Clara wondered if folding the wings in the opposite direction would change it. We tried it and she was right. Now it spins in an anti-clockwise direction..

We shortened the wings of the green helicopter to see what would happen. Eamon tested them for us and the green helicopter fell faster, so short wings are more dangerous.

Kathleen curled the wings downwards but the short winged helicopter still fell faster.

Would a helicopter fall slower or faster if its wings were curled up?
David tried it out by curling the wings of the white one and it turned upside down and crash landed.

We cut the wings of our green helicopter lenthwise,
so it has 4 wings.
We guessed it might go slower.
Ruth tested them for us and as you can see
the green one fell much slower - so it is better.

In the next test we shortened the wings of the green helicopter. Most of us guessed that this would make it crash land and when Fintan tested it we were correct.

Trevor tested an orange card helicopter and a green paper one to see which would land the slowest.
We guessed it might be the paper one and we were right.
