Jan 28th - Action Day in St. Patrick's

Some boys from Fifth Class help keep our school litter free

LOOKING BACK - WHAT WE HAD PLANNED..............................

On Friday next, 28th January we are having an Action Day in the school, which means a bit of a spring clean. We are aiming to clear out, clean up and recycle as much as we can. Each classroom, corridor, storage room, yard and office will be cleaned up and we also hope to sort out the hall and stage areas.

We think that some plants would add colour to our windows so all donations will be gratefully received!

Hopefully the weather will be kind on Friday, Action Day as we aim to make the outside of the school as clean and tidy as possible. Inside, when all our cleaning and tidying is done, we might find time to write or draw pictures and so record our efforts in some way. Here's looking forward to a cleaner, brighter school!

In St. Patrick’s BNS in Castlebar we are working very hard to get our Green Flag. As part of the process we held an “Action Day” on Friday, 28th January. The idea was to clean up and brighten up our school.

Every teacher and class agreed to participate fully with our Action Day and a note was sent home to all parents informing them of all the plans we had for the day. Lots of boys brought in polish, cloths and plants. All of the classrooms were cleaned and tidied, as were the corridors, yards and pitches.

A major clean-up was also carried out in our school hall. The two storage rooms under the stairs were completely cleared out, as was the attic. We had a lot of recycling to do, as you can imagine! Parents snapped up the old school desks for the bargain price of ten euro!! At 9.15 a.m. not one desk remained under the stage.

Everyone agreed that our school could do with some greenery. It was planned that we would put plants along the corridors, in the reception area and in the courtyard in the junior section. We got some plants from Shaw’s Nursery, which look well in the reception area, the staff room and the office.
We also had a great deal of help from the Horkan family, who had three generations here on the day! They supplied us with plants for the corridors, plants for the courtyard, compost and plant pots. Their advice was greatly appreciated.

The best thing about the day was the way all pupils, teachers, staff, parents and people from local businesses came together. There was a great atmosphere in the school and everyone seemed to enjoy it. A big thanks to everyone who helped us out and made the day such a huge success.
