By Town & County Council
27, Jul 2009 - 13:53

The Mayors of Castlebar and Mayo launched a campaign to raise the awareness of the detrimental effects of chewing gum on the streets of the towns and villages in Mayo. After cigarette butts (46%) chewing gum accounts for 31% of the litter on our streets and is particularly difficult and expensive to remove.

Michael Kilcoyne and John Cribben along with the Town Manager of Castlebar Seamus Granaghan launched the campaign which was organised by staff from Castlebar Town Council and Mayo County council.

A demonstration of the removal of gum at Ellison Street was carried out by a 'gum busting machine' that removes all traces of the gum from the street. A programme for the removal of gum throughout the county is being drawn up.
