Castlebar Tidy Towns have for a third year in a row won a silver medal at the National Tidy Towns Competition held on Monday in Dublin. The local volunteer group increased their overall points total to 316, which puts them within a grasp of gold medal status. This is a remarkable achievement as points are very scarce at this level, and over the last few years the committee have increased their points by over 10%. The judges noted improvements in various area including "built environment/streetscape", "wildlife, habitats/natural amenities", "tidiness and litter control", "residential streets & housing areas" and "approach roads, streets and lanes".

Speaking after the event, Castlebar Tidy Towns chairperson, Alan Mee, said, "we are delighted with this result that reflects the hard work and dedication of all our volunteers and the work of other community groups around Castlebar". Castlebar Tidy Towns have worked with Mayo County Council and local groups such as GMIT GreenCampus and LoveCastlebar, to name but a few, to enhance and improve the streetscape and appearance of the county town. To make the next push towards gold medal status new volunteers are needed and they can connect with Castlebar Tidy Towns on Facebook or by contacting Alan on 087 2965034.
