The Story of an Arctic Buoy

In the Autumn of 2013 documentary maker and cameraman, Fergus Sweeney, came upon a very large buoy washed up on the Mullet peninsula. The name of the the manufacturer,  Gilman Corporation, was on its side. Fergus contacted them and they put him in touch with the owners, The Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution, Maine.

Ice Tethered Profiler Buoy 47 had drifted from the Arctic Circle across the North Atlantic to Ireland over a period of 18 months.

Áras Inis Gluaire/Erris Arts Centre commissioned Fergus to produce an exhibition telling the story of the buoy and its journey. This is being carried out with the assistance of TY students from local secondary school, Coláiste Chomáin.

The exhibition consists of an installation of the buoy, video, images and a soundscape that will capture its trip across the Atlantic.

Exhibition opened on Thursday 6th February and the exhibition will remain on display throughout February in Áras Inis Gluaire, Belmullet.
