"Is that how you plan to rule this place, with a bridge as the gallows?"

Renowned poet Sean Lysaght sets his scene on Mayo's once remote Achill Island, in the very first staging of his play. Lysaght casts his poetic eye on times when a litany of powerful "intruders" forced their hand to reign in the independent spirit of the islanders. How? By connecting them to the mainland with bridges. Refusing to surrender to the occupier, the islanders sabotage a succession of bridges built by the intruders, triggering calamities which are mirrored in the vigorous but fierce clash of the sea against the land, and in the human relationships that are trapped and gutted in the ongoing power struggle. Achill, Hanna and her husband Lermon are torn in a harrowing triangle: the pull of suppressed passion, the ties of conventional loyalty and a yearning for peace all warring within them - as the external struggle continues to take its toll. Can there be a just settlement? How much loss is too much? What is the price of peace?

Presented by Mayo theatre company theatreWorksWest (The Cherry Orchard), directed by Trisha Kuester.
