An exhibition of sculpture by John Mc Hugh, a sculptor living in Achill. The work is informed directly by the surrounding landscape and cultural environment of his native Achill Island, with particular reference to Dooagh village. Rubble and concrete masonry recovered from demolished houses and built structures, including the village pier, are combined with bog deal and found fragments of farm machinery, implements and other discarded objects. John concludes: “The sculptures are like a monument to the island’s past, but crucially they also strive to achieve a sense of inventive possibility and levity; they avoid over-emotion or nostalgia, and the process of making the works looks as much to the future.” A fascinating and evocative show in prospect.

Official opening on Friday 1st February at 7.30pm. The opening will be performed by Catherine Marshall, Adviser (Touring & Collections) Arts Council of Ireland, on secondment from the Collection Department, Irish Museum of Modern Art. All welcome.
