For his latest work, director Tony Gatlif tells a story of an obsessive love and a woman’s search for her lover. Mercurial and tempestuous young woman Zingarina arrives in Romania to find the Romany musician she met in her native France. His unexpected departure and return to Transylvania has left her both pregnant and unable to understand his departure. Zingarina throws herself body and soul into the trip, venturing into the strange, forbidding foreignness of the mythic territory of Transylvania. What she finds there is like life itself: surprising and full of the unexpected. A film of high-octane emotions and the anarchic demi-monde existence of Gatlif’s notional Romanian hinterland, where the raw business of life and death is inextricably bound up with music, superstition and love.
“Lashings of authentic musical fervour and Céline Bozon’s camerawork … an insidiously memorable visual experience.” - Trevor Johnston, Time Out
“Raw, ragged, rambling and romantic… a seductive and potent experience.” - Jon Fortgang, Channel 4 Film
