Mayo County Council have appointed consultants to carry out a comprehensive Traffic & Transportation Study for Castlebar town and its immediate surrounds. It is intended that all aspects of transport be included in the study and the consultants have been asked to examine the following:

• the types of journeys undertaken in and through Castlebar
• the condition of the road network serving Castlebar
• the delivery and collection systems in place, particularly around the town centre
• facilities available for the disabled, cyclists and pedestrians
• public transport facilities
• the "school run"
• the feasibility of pedestrianising sections of Main Street and/or Market Square
