The Thornhill Monument, near Lecanvey.

Thornhill Monument.
There are many small, but interesting archaeological sites to be found scattered throughout the landscape of Co. Mayo. The site pictured here is situated at Thornhill, just east of Lecanvey, and it is interesting because it contains not one, but two monuments from different eras. A Bronze Age mound, probably containing a burial , is surmounted by a 19th century memorial commemorating Catholic Emancipation which occurred in 1829. The monument is shown on the 1838 Ordnance Survey map as a circular “mound” with no indication of the added 160 cms high stone structure on top of it. The original metal cross, which once crowned the monument, had weakened and corroded; it fell in a Christmas storm in recent years. It would be a good thing if the cross was replaced with a similar emblem as part of our cultural heritage.
