Dr. Rachel Moss, TCD, will be the guest speaker at the next meeting of the Mayo Historical & Archaeological Society to be held in the Michael Davitt Room, GMIT. Campus, Castlebar on Wednesday night, March 24th, at 8 pm.

Dr Rachel Moss is lecturer in the department of History of Art at Trinity College Dublin. She is editor of Making and Meaning in Insular Art (2007) and co-editor of Art and Devotion in Late Medieval Ireland (2006). She is currently working on the first volume of Art and Architecture of Ireland, a five volume reference text to be published by the Royal Irish Academy and Yale University Press.

The title of her lecture is - Art and Patronage in late Medieval Ireland

This illustrated talk will examine the art and architecture of monastic Ireland in the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries. The different types of objects that were produced during the period will be examined, together with the motivation behind their creation and what they tell us about the society that created them. A number of examples of local buildings and artworks will be included in the talk and placed in the broader context of the time.

Particular emphasis will be placed on the Mayo religious house i.e. Straide, Rosserk, Moyne etc.
