Caher Island Pilgrimage

Pilgrimage to Caher Island, Clew Bay. Close on two hundred pilgrims made the journey from Roonagh Quay to Caher Island in Clew Bay for the annual pattern on August 15th, the Feast of the Assumption. Their efforts were rewarded by a beautiful day with bright sunshine and a smooth crossing. Visitors from all parts of Ireland, Europe, and the U.S. attended the celebration of Mass in the ruins of the medieval oratory. The celebrant was Fr. Michéal Mannion and the people of Inishturk sang hymns during the ceremony. Caher Island is a veritable open-air museum dating back to early Christian times but it is being sorely neglected by the authorities and is falling into a state of decay. Something urgently needs to be done to consolidate the remains of the oratory before it collapses completely. After the ceremonies were completed, the visitors went on to Inishturk island, and received the usual warm welcome from the community.
