In 2016, while out hill walking on Bengorm Mountain, near Newport, local man, Michael Chambers, made a most important archaeological discovery, which has added a completely new dimension to the prehistoric story of the area. In a previously unknown cave-like chamber in the hills, Michael found some bones scattered on the mud floor, and subsequent scientific analysis of the bones has shown them to be of human origin, the oldest dating from 3600 B.C. in the the Neolithic period. This important discovery has generated great interest in Irish archaeological and historical circles.
The Mayo Historical & Archaeological Society are pleased that Dr. Marion Dowd, who led the Bengorm excavations, has kindly accepted their invitation to present an illustrated talk on the results of her work, at their upcoming monthly meeting in November.
Scheduled to take place on Wednesday, November 7th at 8 pm., in the GMIT Campus, Castlebar, Dr. Dowd will deliver her lecture entitled ‘Neolithic Death Rituals in the Mayo Mountains: Archaeological excavation at Bangor (Nephin Beg range)'.
Marion Dowd, Lecturer in Prehistoric Archaeology at Sligo I.T., is a specialist in cave archaeology and an acclaimed author in her field. Her book, The Archaeology of Caves in Ireland, won Book of the Year at the 2016 Archaeology Awards,
This talk promises to be a most interesting and informative event.
