from  Vincent Jordan
Does anyone remember when an airplane full of Clew Bay oysters crashed just after take off from Castlebar airport into the side of what was then known as Travenol? Not every town in Ireland has had a plane crash on its doorstep. Then not every town has had a plane without wings pushed down its main street either I suppose!

While browsing the web, I came across the above query from Vincent Jordan under the heading “Weird and Wonderful Castlebar”.

I took the photo of a crashed aircraft at the Travenol complex near the now defunct airport. It collided with the building while endeavouring to land; happily, all on board survived the impact and after hospital treatment were released. If my memory serves me right, the aircraft was on a journey from Coventry to Castlebar.

I think Vincent is confusing this incident with a French aircraft that was involved in another incident and crash-landed in a ditch close-by. The pilot escaped without injury although the aircraft was badly damaged in the impact.
