Mayo Historical & Archaeological Society in association with the Heritage Dept. GMIT.

The first of this season's series of lectures takes place on Wednesday, October 25th at 8 pm., in the GMIT Campus, Castlebar.

Portal Tombs - What, Where and Why.

Speaker:           Dr.Phyllis Mercer.

Dr. Mercer studied archaeology in NUI Galway in 2006 and was awarded a PhD degree in 2015.  Her doctoral thesis has been published by BAR (British Archaeological Records).

Portal tombs are the least studied and understood of the great Irish  Neolithic megalithic monuments.  A recent study examined aspects of  their construction and usage, preferred site locations, and their defined  morphology and suggests possible reasons for the construction of these  wonderful monuments.
