Dr. Carleton Jones, Archaeology Dept., NUI Galway.

Dr. Carleton Jones, Archaeology Dept., NUI Galway, will be the guest speaker at the next meeting of  the Mayo Historical & Archaeological Society to be held in the Michael Davitt Room,  GMIT Campus on Wednesday, January 26th at 8 pm. The title of his illustrated lecture is "Thinking with Stones and The Megalithic Tombs of Ireland".

American born, Dr. Jones received his Ph.D. from the University of Cambridge in 1997 with a study of prehistoric landscapes in Ireland. After receiving his Ph.D. he directed Burren Archaeology Research, an organisation set up to facilitate the continuation of research on Roughan Hill, in county Clare. Currently, he is a lecturer at NUIG.

Dr. Jones is the author of  several articles in both academic and popular archaeological journals, and in 2004 one of his two major works, The Burren and the Aran Islands - Exploring the Archaeology, was published, followed in 2008 by Temples of Stone: Exploring the Megalithic Tombs of Ireland. His forthcoming lecture promises to be a most interesting event.
