Mayo Historical & Archaeological Society in conjuction with the Heritage Dept., GMIT,  recommences its series of lectures  on Wednesday night, November 6th at the GMIT Campus, Castlebar, starting at 8pm.

The speaker will be Mr. Michael Gibbons, one of Ireland's best known field archaeologists who has carried out research on the maritime pilgrimage tradition in Ireland. The title of his illustrated lecture is "The Discovery of an Outer Pilgrimage Round on Caher Island".

The uninhabited Caher Island is a much venerated area in Clew Bay, situated between Roonagh Pier and Inishturk. Each year, hundreds of pilgrims attend the annual "pattern day" held on the 15th August to honour the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary. Mass is celebrated on an altar close to an ancient churh ruin and the pilgrims have a chance to see the many ecclesiastical monuments dotted around the holy island.

Michael Gibbons has discovered a long forgotten  Outer Pilgrimage Round on the island and this, together with commentry on the island's history and its fascinating monuments, will be the basis for what should be a most interesting lecture.

All are welcome
