Mayo Historical & Archaeological Society in association with the Heritage Studies Dept., GMIT, Castlebar will host a historical lecture to be given by Prof. Gearoid O Tuathaigh, Professor Emeritus NUI Galway, on Thursday, February 20th at 8 pm at the GMIT Campus, Castlebar.

Title: Aspects of religion and society in 19th century Mayo

The lecture will discuss some of the main changes in religious practice in the Catholic dioceses of Mayo (Tuam, Killala, Achonry) during the 19th century.

While the supply and zeal of individual bishops, priests and other religious personnel will be assessed, the lecture will pay particular attention to the importance of changing economic and social conditions in influencing the religious life of Catholics in the county during the 19th century.

Prof. O Tuathaigh has recently retired from the History Dept., NUIG, where he had a long and distinguished career. He continues with his studies and writes for various academic publications. He is in constant demand for lectures and the organisers of the upcoming event are privileged and pleased to welcome him to Castlebar.
