The "Titanic" memorial tablet in Lahardane church.

Titanic Memorial Tablet.

This marble memorial tablet, mounted on the wall of Lahardane church, commemorates eleven people from the parish of Addergoole who died on the night of Sunday, April 15th 1912, when the ill-fated passenger liner,  "Titanic", struck an iceberg and sank on its maiden voyage to the United States. Three people who survived the tragedy are also remembered here, all have since passed to their eternal reward. Anne McGowan, born in Scranton, USA., the last  survivor, who was just fourteen years of age at the time of the disaster, died in 1990. The loss of so many people in this most shocking event  had a devastating effect in this small and close knit community.

There is a very good account of the dramatic happenings of ninety-six years ago in the late Tony Donohoe’s book “Addergoole - Its Land and People”. pps 65-71 (2000).
